Great history I somehow did not know despite years in Aerospace. We should free up the limit. However, the value vs cost of higher airspeed is a bit wobbly. Even point to point ATM has been hard to justify. The limit however should be modified to let entrepreneurs make their business case.

I sort of like the occasional sound of sonic boom.

I think there are some good ways of driving supersonic cost down with better engines, fuels, aircraft designs, and business models.

Consider flying between New York and LA today. You can book a ticket on an airliner flying Mach 0.8 and do it in six hours. If you could do it in a 1930s-era DC-3, it would take 18 hours with three stops. And probably cost more. Suprisingly, the faster mode is the cheaper one. In the long run, that can extend to supersonics.
